Philosophy

Things don't have to behave as expected.
I like order.
I love disturbing it.

Touch the art.
Learn. Unlearn. Relearn.

Look. Question. Disturb. Make. Look again. Earth and fire do not always follow instructions. Neither do I. That's my design ritual. The result is sculpture that rewards curiosity. Objects that possess their space, but don't give everything away at once.

Objects for people who look twice.

Chapter I

The Year of Return Collection

To know where we are going, we sometimes have to look back. This collection draws together heritage, ancient symbolism, and contemporary sculpture. It explores memory, ancestry and belonging. Not as nostalgia, but as living conversations between past and present.

I’m Speaking (with Justice)

Before language was written, it was carried by rhythm.

Inspired by the tradition of West African talking drums, this paired sculpture explores communication, memory and the power of a collective voice. Each form balances independently or together, reflecting the fragile relationship between individual stories and the movements that unite them.A two piece sculpture, positioned together or individually. Both pieces I'm Speaking and Justice are designed to balance independently (find the centre).

The Shape Of You

A celebration of identity, femininity and belonging.

Grounded in Akan symbolism, The Shape of You explores strength through softness. Interactive rings inspired by traditional waist beads may be rearranged to mark memory, relationships or moments of personal significance, allowing each owner to shape the narrative anew.

Child of the Heavens

Communication, identity, ancestry, transformation and contemporary experience.

Inspired by the Akan Adinkra symbol combining the moon (osram) and the star (nsoromma), Child of the Heavens speaks of guidance, hope and protection. Its rotating upper form allows light, shadow and balance to change with every movement - a reminder that heritage is not static, but something continually rediscovered.

Transformation of Character

Progress, like sculpture, is rarely linear.

Drawing upon the Adinkra symbol Sesa Wo Suban ("transform your character"), Transformation of Character reflects the lifelong process of growth. The outer form represents new beginnings. The inner wheel speaks of continual becoming.

Eclipse

An exploration of balance disguised as simplicity.

Architectural forms stack, separate and reconnect in a composition that appears to challenge gravity. Every angle creates a new relationship between weight, shadow and space, inviting the viewer to question why something so unlikely feels so perfectly resolved.

Inner Voice

Gravity becomes the sculptor.

Balanced upon a curved form, this piece settles naturally into its own centre of equilibrium. What first appears impossible quietly reveals itself as inevitable - a study of trust, tension and the invisible forces that shape both sculpture and ourselves.

Chapter II

The Chaos and Curiosity Collection

Order has never been the only path to beauty. These works celebrate instinct over conformity. They ask us to reconsider what we call disorder and whether creativity ever truly belongs inside straight lines.

Some boundaries exist only because we accept them.

Out-Thinking The Box I is an invitation to question habit, expectation and inherited ways of thinking. It celebrates curiosity over certainty, encouraging us to step beyond the familiar and discover the freedom that exists just outside the lines. A nod to those who refuse to follow herd-mentality.

Strength isn't always loud.

I Sunk, Quickly

Not every thought arrives in order.

Angular forms, shifting perspectives and deliberate imbalance reflect the quiet turbulence of the human mind. I Sunk, Quickly asks an uncomfortable question: if disorder is part of being human, perhaps it deserves to be seen not as weakness - but as beauty.

Chapter III

The Touched Collection

Touch changes everything. This collection explores what happens when sculpture refuses to remain static. Each work invites participation. Balance shifts. Relationships change. The sculpture evolves through every interaction. No arrangement is permanent. Neither are we.

COMMISSIONS
COMMISSIONS

Made for a place. Made for a person. Made to belong.

A commission is an invitation to create something that does not yet exist.

Nana Berchie Design Rituals creates original sculptural works for private collectors, interior designers, architects, art consultants and distinctive residential and hospitality spaces.

It may begin with a particular space, an architectural detail, a story, a feeling, or simply the desire for a work with presence. From there, Nana develops a sculptural response that brings together form, material, texture, balance and movement.

The result is not simply an object made to fit a space. It is a work conceived to have a relationship with it.

What we commission

Four ways a commission can begin.

Private commissions offer the opportunity to acquire an original Nana Berchie sculpture developed specifically for you.

A commission may evolve from the language of an existing collection or begin as an entirely new exploration. Scale, proportion, surface, material and tone are considered as part of the work, while retaining the distinctive sculptural language of the studio.

The intention is never to reproduce an existing piece. It is to create something with its own identity.

The Commissioning Process

From conversation to placement.

BESPOKE SCULPTURE

Timelines

Every commission is different. Timing depends upon scale, complexity, material development, drying and firing schedules and, where applicable, installation requirements. An anticipated programme will therefore be agreed at the beginning of each project.

For interior designers, architects and hospitality projects working towards installation or opening dates, early conversations are encouraged.

A Design Ritual

At the centre of Nana Berchie's practice is a fascination with tension and balance: between control and instinct, solidity and emptiness, movement and stillness.

Clay records that negotiation.

A curve changes the space beside it.A void becomes as important as the material surrounding it.A surface asks to be approached differently.

Commissioning a work does not mean prescribing the outcome. It means entering that process.Together, we establish the context. Then the making begins.

Begin a Conversation

If you have a space, project or idea you would like to explore, we would be pleased to hear from you.

For an initial conversation, please include whatever information is currently available - the nature of the project, approximate dimensions, location, desired timeframe and any relevant photographs, plans or interior references.

Projects do not need to be fully resolved before getting in touch.

Nana Berchie
Nana Berchie

For almost three decades I built businesses.
Today, I build with earth and fire.

It may seem like an unlikely second act. It makes more sense than it sounds.

I've always been interested in how things are put together - and what happens when you disturb them.

On making

Born in London, with Ghanaian heritage, that cultural duality means I make from instinct, experience and an eye that tends to notice the slightly strange. Places, people, visual language, histories and ways of seeing inevitably find their way into the work.

I'm particular.A curve matters.An edge matters.An empty space matters.

Nothing exists by accident.

On interactivity

I like contradictions. Weight that appears light. Fragility that looks strong. Forms that could be ancient or entirely new. Still objects, until you discover that something moves.

That last part matters to me.

Some of my sculptures aren't finished when I am. They can be touched. Turned. Balanced. Rearranged. In those works, I'm not necessarily the last person to make an artistic decision. The collector becomes part of what happens next.

Others simply stand and possess their space.

On looking

I don't want to make sculpture that explains itself immediately.I'd rather you stop.Look again. And notice something tomorrow that you didn't notice today.

Studio Experiences

The studio opens its doors to just six guests at a time.

A small number of sessions are released each month, allowing every experience to remain personal, unhurried and centred around the pleasure of making.

These are intimate sculptural experiences for people who want to slow down, work with their hands and spend a few hours somewhere outside the rhythm of everyday life.

No experience is needed. No artistic ability is expected.Only curiosity.

What's provided

Everything you need is waiting in the studio - materials, aprons, firing, refreshments and personal guidance from Nana.

After your session

What you make is carefully dried, fired and where appropriate finished after your visit, ready for collection from the studio or delivery several weeks later.

The Experiences
01£145 pp

The Halo Experience

Our signature sculptural experience. The Halo begins before you arrive. Each sculpture is individually made in the studio, allowing your session to focus entirely on colour, texture, and expression. Working with slips, oxides, and glazes, you'll transform the sculpture into something entirely personal. Minimal. Bold. Playful. Quiet. There are no rules. Only your instinct. After the session, each piece returns to the kiln for its final firing before being ready for collection or delivery. Leave with the experience. Receive the sculpture a few weeks later. 2.5 hours * maximum 3 guests

02£125 pp

The Sip & Sculpt Experience

An evening in the intimate studio. Clay. Conversation. Good wine. No phones if you don't want them. Whether you're celebrating something, reconnecting with friends or simply looking for an alternative to another restaurant reservation, this is time to slow down. Working with clay by hand, you'll create your own sculptural forms while enjoying carefully selected wine, homemade bakes and an intimate studio atmosphere. No pressure. No judgement. Just making. 2.5 hours * maximum 3 guests * 18+

03£165 private family experience

It's a Mucky Business Experience

Clay was never meant to stay clean. These sessions are built for curious little hands and even bigger imaginations. Families sculpt together. Children lead. Adults usually end up having just as much fun. Every visit introduces a different creative challenge, so no two sessions are ever quite the same. Mess encouraged. Perfection discouraged. 2 hours * maximum 4 guests 1 adult + up to 3 children * 6+

04£150 pp

The Slow Experience

No brief. No outcome. No pressure to make something beautiful. Just clay. A calm studio. And time. Three hours of largely unstructured studio time with Nana, clay, refreshments, music if wanted, conversation if wanted, silence if wanted. Some guests leave with a sculpture. Others simply enjoy the process. Both are equally valuable. 3 hours * maximum 3 guests

FAQ
How long until my sculpture is ready?

Ceramics refuses to be rushed.

Your work needs time to dry completely before being fired and, where appropriate, glazed or finished and returned to the kiln.

Please allow approximately 4-6 weeks after your experience. Occasionally a piece may need a little longer. We'll let you know as soon as your work is ready to collect from the studio.

Delivery can also be arranged for an additional charge.

Can I bring wine?

Wine is included as part of Sip & Sculpt, alongside non-alcoholic alternatives.

For our other experiences, refreshments are provided, so there is no need to bring your own drinks.

Can beginners come?

Absolutely.

Most guests have little or no previous experience with clay. These experiences aren't about technical perfection and you don't need to consider yourself artistic.

We'll show you everything you need to know.

Curiosity is enough.

What should I wear?

Come comfortably and wear something you won't mind getting a little clay on.

Aprons are provided, but clay has a habit of finding places aprons don't cover.

We also recommend short nails where possible and removing rings or delicate bracelets before working with clay.

What ages can attend?

The Halo Experience and The Slow Experience are designed primarily for adults, although young people aged 14+ are welcome when accompanied by a participating adult.

Sip & Sculpt is for guests aged 18+ only.

It's a Mucky Business is our family experience and is designed especially for children aged 6+, accompanied by a participating parent or guardian.

If you're unsure whether an experience will suit a younger guest, please get in touch before booking.

What happens if my work cracks in the kiln?

Clay has a mind of its own.

Every piece is carefully dried, handled and fired in the studio, but cracking, warping and other unexpected changes can occasionally happen from the making process, during drying or firing. It is part of the nature of working with ceramics.

Where possible, we'll assess whether a piece can be repaired or sympathetically finished. If a piece is damaged beyond repair as a result of the studio firing process, we'll contact you and arrange an appropriate solution.

Small variations in colour, surface, shape and finish are part of the ceramic process and aren't considered faults - they're part of what makes each piece individual.

Can my finished work be posted to me?

Yes.

Collection from the studio is included with every experience.

If you'd prefer your finished work delivered, we can carefully package and send it to you once it has completed its final firing. Delivery is charged separately and depends on the size, weight and destination of your piece.

UK and international delivery can be arranged.

How long will you keep my finished work?

We'll contact you as soon as your work is ready.

Because ours is a small working studio with limited storage, we ask that pieces are collected within four weeks of your collection notification.

If you need a little longer, just let us know. Alternatively, delivery can be arranged.

What is the cancellation or rescheduling policy?

With only a handful of places available for each Studio Experience, every booking matters.

If your plans change, please let us know as early as possible.

Bookings may be rescheduled once, free of charge, with at least 7 days' notice, subject to availability.

Cancellations made at least 7 days before your experience will receive a full refund.

Bookings cancelled or changed with less than 7 days' notice are non-refundable and cannot normally be rescheduled. You are, however, welcome to transfer your place to someone else - just let us know their name before the session.

If we ever need to cancel an experience, you'll be offered an alternative date or a full refund.

Can I buy additional sculptures?

For The Halo Experience, additional Halo sculptures may be available to purchase and personalise during your session, subject to studio availability.

Original Nana Berchie sculptures may also be viewed or purchased separately where works are available.

Can I commission work afterwards?

Of course.

If spending time in the studio sparks an idea for an original Nana Berchie sculpture of your own, we'd be delighted to continue the conversation.

Private commissions and site-specific works can be discussed with Nana after your visit or through the Commissions page.

Can I book the whole studio?

Yes.

Private studio bookings can be arranged for up to four guests and are particularly suited to birthdays, anniversaries, couples, families or simply spending time together without sharing the studio with others.

Please contact the studio to discuss a private booking.

Can I bring music?

Yes.

There is music in the studio, but if you have a playlist that belongs to the occasion, bring it. And if you'd rather make in quiet, that's perfectly fine too.

Do I need to glaze my sculpture?

No.

Glazing is only one way of finishing ceramic work.

Depending on the experience, you'll have access to appropriate slips, oxides, glazes and surface treatments, and Nana will guide you through the possibilities.

Where further glazing or finishing is required after your session, we'll take care of it before the final firing.
